March 10, 2018
It’s going to be a busy summer as the transformation continues along Yonge Street in Newmarket. Crews will continue to work on the west side of Yonge to complete streetscape works and will start road widening activities on the east side of Yonge between Savage Road/Sawmill Valley Drive and Davis Drive.
work dates*: Monday, May 14, for approximately six months
work hours*: 7am – 7pm
what you need to know:
-
To accommodate multiple work activities, traffic lanes on Yonge will be shifted west, reduced and narrowed at times.
-
Crews will remove existing pavement, curbs and sidewalks on the east side, where required.
-
At times, northbound and southbound Yonge will be reduced to one lane in each direction around the work zone. Advance notice will be provided when possible.
-
Crews will install storm sewer, subdrain pipes, new curbs, planters, sidewalks and bike lanes and then backfill and pave the work area.
-
Where bus stops and sidewalks are affected, directional signs will guide pedestrians to the nearest open bus stop or sidewalk.
-
Access will be maintained to properties in work areas; however, driveways may be reduced or temporarily disrupted. Advance notice will be provided wherever possible.
-
At times, night and weekend work will be required.
-
There will be construction-related noise and dust from equipment and trucks.
-
Please remember to reduce your speed through construction zones and be mindful of traffic shifts and signs that will help guide you along your way. Always drive with care and give yourself extra time to get to your destination.
safety during rapidway construction is crucial
Pay attention to posted signs in and around construction zones.
Because construction zones change as work progresses, it’s especially important for everyone – pedestrians, cyclists and drivers – to pay attention to posted signs. Watch for signs and traffic barrels that indicate lane closures and shifts, as well as relocated sidewalks and bus stops.
Cross at the designated crosswalk.
It can be tempting to cross in the middle of the road, but this can be very dangerous. Instead, cross at a designated crosswalk. Look both ways and be aware of your surroundings.
Obey the posted speed limit in construction zones.
Active construction zones often have reduced speed limits for good reason. To protect construction workers and pedestrians, it’s crucial for drivers to slow down and follow the posted speed limit, and pay close attention to construction signs and road markings.
The value of patience.
While construction can often be messy and look chaotic, we’re working hard to transform the corridor to a complete street with sidewalks, bike lanes and rapid transit. Your patience is appreciated.
Safety is a shared responsibility.
Safety of the site and the construction workers is very important on any job to make sure at the end of every day, everyone gets home to their families.
