The transformation continues along Yonge Street in Newmarket as crews reach another project milestone! Starting Monday and continuing for the next few weeks, crews will begin installing paver stones, pouring concrete for the curb and paving the base-layer asphalt on the newly widened road. See below for more details.
paver stones installation from Mulock to Clearmeadow
Starting Monday, crews will begin installing paver stones on the west side of Yonge from Mulock Drive to Clearmeadow Boulevard and progress north.
work dates*: Monday, September 17, for approximately 5 weeks
work hours*: 7am – 7pm
what you need to know:
- As crews install paver stones, there will be temporary southbound lane closures around the work area.
- At times, southbound Yonge will be reduced to one lane around the work area between 9:30am to 5:30pm.
curb installations from Eagle to Davis
On Monday, crews will begin installing curb on the east side of Yonge from just south of Eagle Street to Davis Drive.
work dates*: Monday, September 17 and Tuesday, September 18
work hours*: 7am – 7pm
what you need to know:
- As crews pour the concrete curb across each driveway in the work area, there will be intermittent closures for up to one hour.
- Crews will steel plate each driveway to allow for vehicle access.
paving from Eagle to Davis
During the week of September 24, crews will begin paving the base-layer asphalt on the east side of Yonge, from Eagle to Davis.
work dates*: Monday, September 24 - Friday, September 28
work hours*: 7am – 7pm
what you need to know:
- Following curb installations, crews will pave the newly widened road on the east side of Yonge.
- Since paving is a rolling operation, some driveways will experience intermittent disruptions.
- The final coat of asphalt will be paved near the completion of the rapidway.
- Paving is heavily dependent on good dry weather and specific temperatures. If the weather does not permit, paving operations will be postponed.
other details:
- Pedestrian access around the work area will be maintained. If a sidewalk is closed, look for directional signs which will guide you to the nearest open sidewalk.
- Wherever possible, bus stops will remain open for the duration of this activity. If a bus stop is temporarily closed, directional signs will be onsite to guide pedestrians to the nearest open bus stop.
- Traffic control staff will be onsite to help direct traffic as required.
- Due to the nature of this work, there will be construction-related noise and dust from equipment and trucks.
- Please give yourself enough time to get to your destination, and remember to reduce your speed through construction zones.
safety during rapidway construction is crucial
Pay attention to posted signs in and around construction zones.
Because construction zones change as work progresses, it’s especially important for everyone – pedestrians, cyclists and drivers – to pay attention to posted signs. Watch for signs and traffic barrels that indicate lane closures and shifts, as well as relocated sidewalks and bus stops.
Cross at the designated crosswalk.
It can be tempting to cross in the middle of the road, but this can be very dangerous. Instead, cross at a designated crosswalk. Look both ways and be aware of your surroundings.
Obey the posted speed limit in construction zones.
Active construction zones often have reduced speed limits for good reason. To protect construction workers and pedestrians, it’s crucial for drivers to slow down and follow the posted speed limit, and pay close attention to construction signs and road markings.
The value of patience.
While construction can often be messy and look chaotic, we’re working hard to transform the corridor to a complete street with sidewalks, bike lanes and rapid transit. Your patience is appreciated.
Safety is a shared responsibility.
Safety of the site and the construction workers is very important on any job to make sure at the end of every day, everyone gets home to their families.
