Yonge Subway Extension

Yonge Subway Extension

The planned Yonge Subway Extension [YSE] is a cross-jurisdictional project from the City of Toronto into the City of Markham, City of Vaughan and City of Richmond Hill.

The YSE extends 7.4 kilometres north from Finch Station in Toronto to the Richmond Hill/Langstaff Gateway Urban Growth Centre at Highway 7.

This critical rapid transit link will include up to six stations at Richmond Hill Centre, Langstaff/Longbridge, Royal Orchard, Clark, Steeles and Cummer/Drewry. It will also include two intermodal terminals (at Steeles and Richmond Hill Centre Station) and 2,000 commuter parking spaces near Langstaff/Longbridge Station.

  • The YSE completes a critical missing link in the regional rapid transit system of the GTHA, creating a seamless connection throughout the region. It will save more than 11 tonnes of greenhouse gas per workday by replacing the 2,800 bus trips currently serving the demand between Finch and Highway 7 along Yonge Street. This cross-jurisdictional project will create jobs and produce a lasting economic stimulus.
  • The preliminary planning, design and engineering (PDE) phase of the YSE is currently underway and expected to be completed within the next 12 months. To complete the PDE phase for the YSE, the Government of Canada committed $36 million and the Province of Ontario, through Metrolinx, committed $55 million. In April 2019, the Province of Ontario announced $11.2 billion to support capital construction for four major rapid transit projects, including the Yonge Subway Extension.
