The Highway 7 East Bus Rapid Transit [BRT] corridor currently services 6,700 daily passenger trips and is projected to service over 10,100 by 2035.

Funding >> York Region's 10-year Capital Plan includes funding for Environmental Assessment [EA] and preliminary engineering and design to ensure this critical project is ready for construction funding from senior levels of government.

Timeline >> Planning is underway for the Highway 7 East BRT corridor including a review of the existing Highway 7 East Environmental Assessment and completing preliminary engineering work. As planning and design efforts advance, detailed project updates will be provided.

Highway 7 East BRT segments will support past transit investments and new housing developments, jobs and population while connecting transit riders to major transportation hubs – including the existing BRT along Highway 7, GO Transit and Cornell Bus Terminal. Key destinations along this critical corridor include Markham Stouffville Hospital, York University’s Markham Campus, Pan Am Centre, Markham YMCA , Markville Mall and cycling paths.

York Region moves forward with major investment for bus rapid transit design on Highway 7 East

On June 15, 2026, we celebrated the award of a $7.66 million design contract to CIMA Canada Inc. and GHD Limited Joint Venture for preliminary design of Bus Rapid Transit along Highway 7 East in Markham. The planned route will connect Birchmount Road to Markham Stouffville Hospital, to enable new housing, create jobs and reduce gridlock.
